Symposium - Revolutionary Resistance at Pelham Bay: How the Battle of Pell’s Point/Pelham Saved Washington’s Army and the Fight for American Independence

Kicking off the “Revolution on the Sound!”, this 250th symposium will feature historians Friederike Baer, Nick Dembowski, and Professor Lloyd Ultan, with a Q & A moderated by Steven Payne, Bronx County Historical Society and David Allen, SUNY Maritime Humanities Department. Participants will also have an opportunity to explore the grounds, including historic Fort Schuyler, and view the New York State Parks traveling exhibit, “Revisit the Revolution.” Appropriate for students, high school and beyond and adults.

RW250 Toast 250! Tavern Night at Kenny’s on the Water

Kenny’s on the Water, 2 Pelham Road, New Rochelle. Free parking.
Mix and mingle with living history heroes, soldiers and civilians and be among the first to welcome the tall ship Lynx—a replica historic privateer schooner—to Westchester’s and New Rochelle’s 250th celebration. The Lynx will be moored at the dock at Hudson Park (visible from Kenny’s) as part of her 250th eastern seaboard ports-of-call schedule, the only stop in Westchester County! Join George Washington, Ben Franklin, Col. John Glover, British Gen. Howe, the 5th NY and Revolutionary Women for tavern music with The Whiskey Rebels, games with Philipse Manor Hall, a special tavern menu by Kenny’s, and a round or two of our original American Revolution Trivia Game. Food and drink for purchase.

Privateers, Long Island Sound and the American Revolution
A Conversation with Author Eric Jay Dolin and Capt. Donald Peacock of the Lynx

Author and historian Eric Jay Dolin will discuss his award-winning book, Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution, with Captain Donald Peacock, captain of the Lynx, a tall ship inspired by an actual privateer built in 1812 and similar to those that plied the Sound during the American Revolution.Copies of Dolin’s Rebels at Sea and The Wreck of the Mentor: A True Story of Death, Despair and Deliverance in the Age of Sail will be available for purchase and signing by the author following the free program. Suitable for middle, high school and college students and adults.

Lantern-lit Cemetery Tour
Friday, October 16, 2026, at 7:00 pm
St. Paul's Church National Historic Site, 897 S. Columbus Ave., Mt. Vernon
Historic St. Paul's Church will come alive with an outstanding performance of 18th century music inside the church. Then, beginning at about 8 pm, participants may pick up a candle-lit lantern for a guided tour of the cemetery, one of our nation's oldest burial yards. As guests visit the graves, they’ll hear the tales of soldiers and townsfolk who lived through the epic story of the American Revolution. Free admission, free parking; light refreshments will be served. This is an event for all ages.

Public Tours of the Tall Ship Lynx
Saturday, October 17, 2026, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Free parking.
Hudson Park, 1 Hudson Park Road, New Rochelle (adjacent to the Municipal Marina)
The crew of the Lynx will provide guided tours of the ship, a historic privateer schooner. Living history interpreters including the duo Drama from Past, representing Colonel John Glover and British General William Howe, who will welcome guests to the park. Families can try their hand at period games provided by Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site. Food trucks, music and information available about local revolutionary war history. Free tickets for timed tours will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the New Rochelle 250 table near the dock.

Reenactment of the Battle of Pell’s Point/Pelham
Sunday, October 18, 10:00 – 12:00 noon
1 Orchard Beach Road, Bronx, NY 10464 (Orchard Beach Section 12 and South Picnic Area of Pelham Bay Park)
Ample free parking at Orchard Beach Parking Lot, Park Drive, Bronx, NY 10464
The tall ship Lynx will sail from New Rochelle into the area of Pelham Bay, where her cannon will be fired at 10:00 am to mark the official start of the event. The whaleboat replica the Albatross will bring British sailors to a dramatic landing on the sand of Orchard Beach. Reenactors will represent the invading Crown forces as they confront the Patriot resistance from Col. John Glover and his famous Marblehead Mariners, and other regional regiments, all in historic uniforms. Spectators will experience the landing and a fully narrated reenactment of the Battle of Pell’s Point/Pelham, hear fife & drums, watch military drills and maneuvers and meet George Washington, British General Howe, and Col. Glover.

Mamaroneck 250: Commemorating the American Revolution
Sunday, October 18, 2026, 1:00 – 5:00 pm
Pavilion Field, Harbor Island Park, Mamaroneck. Free parking.
A waterfront family day of immersion into the local history of 1776 with re-enactors, kids’ activities (“Join the Continental Army”), living history interpreters — soldiers and civilians — in period dress, heritage craft demonstrations, and the “Saltwater Vagabonds” with their armed whaleboat, the Albatross, a replica of the whaleboats that plied the waters of Long Island Sound during the struggle for independence. Meet British General Howe and the local Loyalist Ward family and Deborah Sampson who disguised herself as a man and joined the Continental Army. A scheduled special feature will be recognition of the local Skirmish at Heathcote Hill, when British loyalist troops were encamped here and Washington’s regiment, The 1st Delaware, staged a daring nighttime attack on them. Known as the Delaware Blues, this renowned unit of reenactors will join Mamaroneck 250 for the day.
